Correctly Using Deep Linking and Oblique Linking
Deep linking is the practice of publishing a link from a page on one site to a page "inside" another site, bypassing the site's home page. It is especially effective when a linked site offers a number of products and services only some of which will be of interest to its link partner's customers.
Example: You offer all kinds of home-care services like lawn mowing, pet sitting, gardening, window washing and pool service. You establish a link with a local vendor of swimming pool parts and accessories. You can make that relationship more effective by asking your link partner to deep link directly to your pool service page instead of your home page.
Oblique linking is the practice of exchanging links with sites that are relevant to yours in an indirect manner -- like the relationship between football games and tailgate parties. If you have a skin-care products site, for example, you could link to sites about the history of cosmetics, sites discussing changing standards in body adornment, or sites devoted to the ingredients (aloe, apricot kernels, collagen etc.) common to skin emollients.
Such "oblique" sites may not, in themselves, score a ton of hits or have high search-engine rankings. But they will contain content relevant to yours and increase your site's appeal to both customers and search engines.
